Two excellent, but very different, one act plays by Terrence Rattigan. The
Browning Version is a serious play in which a disliked schoolmaster, when
forced to retire, confronts his failures as a teacher. husband and man.
Dave Watson playing Andrew Crocker-Harris gave a moving and genuine
performance, with the "I am a failure" speech delivered with feeling and
sincerity. He was supported b y the other members of the cast. Including
Jordan Bushby as Taplow giving a very promising first appearance. Jan Carter
as the vindictive wife and the usual solid performance by Jim Green.
Harlequinade was a delightful farce about an aging actor/manager and his
wife, Glyn Bailey and Isobel Munday playing Romeo and Juliet. Some may
say they were too old for the parts, but not when the effect of a good
wig is taken into account. There was a large cast, far too many for me
to list individually. However I should mention Matthew Davis as the
young stage struck Halberdier. Dave Montgomery, the stage manager
putting on a powerful performance with a strong stage presence. The
wardrobe team are to be congratulated on providing Mike Button with such
a fine suit. Finally Len Bennet as the ancient George Chudleigh. With
such a large cast it must have been known very early on that not all
would be given a line and some would never get on stage. It was much
appreciated when the final curtain came and they all came trooping on.
My favourite being the the Three monks followed closely by the lady with
the red sash.
